Farmer with Maize

Empowering Uganda’s Farmers with Climate-Smart Solutions

About the CSA Project

The Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) project empowers 1,000 farmers in Rwenzori, Elgon, Karamoja, and Lake Victoria Basin to combat climate challenges like floods, droughts, and landslides. Our mobile-friendly platform offers free guides on drought-tolerant crops (e.g., Longe 10H maize), soil conservation techniques, and water harvesting methods to boost yields by 20% and reduce crop losses by 10%. We provide weather alerts via SMS (text JOIN to 8228), a community forum for sharing tips, and impact dashboards to track progress. Available in English and Luganda, our resources are optimized for low-cost Android phones (320px) and 2G/3G networks, ensuring accessibility even offline. In Kasese, farmers like John have earned 500,000 UGX more per season using CSA practices. Partnering with MAAIF, NARO, Radio Pacis, and USAID, we aim to stabilize livelihoods for 500 households and reduce displacement for 1.2 million people. Explore our guides, join our community, or support our mission to enhance food security across Uganda!

Farmer Success Stories

John, a maize farmer in Kasese, faced recurring floods that destroyed his crops. Using CSA guides from our platform, he adopted drought-tolerant maize (Longe 10H) and intercropped with beans to improve soil fertility. By planting in March based on our weather alerts, he avoided flood damage, increasing yields by 20% and earning 500,000 UGX last season. John’s success shows how CSA protects livelihoods.

Mary, a Coffee bean farmer in Elgon, faced landslides. Using our agroforestry guide, she planted 50 Grevillea trees and built contour bunds, reducing soil erosion by 20%. Her coffee bean yields rose by 25%, earning 600,000 UGX. Mary’s farm is now a model for her community.

Peter, a sorghum farmer in Karamoja, struggled with droughts. He used our Soil & Water guide to mulch his fields with dry grass and build a 500L rainwater tank. These methods saved0% water, boosting sorghum yields by 15% and earning him 400,000 UGX. Peter now supports his family of six.

Why CSA Matters

Climate change threatens 70% of Uganda’s farmers with floods, droughts, and landslides, causing 30% crop losses and displacing 1.2 million people annually. In Kasese, floods destroy 25% of maize crops yearly. Karamoja’s droughts reduce sorghum yields by 20%. Elgon’s landslides erode fertile soil, costing farmers 400,000 UGX per season. CSA offers solutions: drought-tolerant seeds increase yields by 20%, mulching saves 20% water, and agroforestry prevents 15% of landslides. Our platform provides free guides, SMS weather alerts, and market connections to help farmers earn 1,000,000 UGX annually. By adopting CSA, farmers protect their land, feed their families, and reduce food insecurity for millions.

CSA Impact Across Uganda

Our CSA project transforms farming in four regions. In Kasese, 300 farmers adopted intercropping, boosting maize yields by 20%. Karamoja’s 200 farmers planted 1,000 trees, reducing drought impacts by 15%. In Elgon, contour bunds saved 200 farms from landslides. Lake Victoria Basin farmers used rainwater harvesting, cutting water use by 20%. These efforts stabilized 500 households.
